Qess - I Keep Coming Back (feat. Andrew Edward Brown) (Josh Wink Interpretation) - OVUM

There’s a reason artists like Josh Wink remain vital after three decades in the game. While others fall prey to trends or nostalgia, Wink continues to orbit on his own axis. The secret isn’t mysticism or over-intellectualization—it’s atemporality. Behind the decks and in the studio, he’s always been a free radical, unbound by genre or expectation. His latest remix only reinforces that status.

Out now via Ovum RecordingsWink’s own label, which marked its 30th anniversary last year—Qess & Andrew Edward Brown’s “I Keep Coming Back” first caught Wink’s ear during a gig for Freerange boss Jimpster in London. Qess, a rising name with credits on Anjunadeep, Mobilee, and Poker Flat, sent over the track shortly after. The result is a remix package that bears all the hallmarks of Wink’s forward-leaning production ethos.

The first version and subject of our attention, dubbed the “Josh Wink Interpretation”, is a seven-minute excursion that blurs the lines between old-school house, techno, and ambient hypnosis. Driven by a tactile percussion, Wink dismantles the original and rebuilds it into a slow-burning trip. Muted vocal refrains by Andrew Edward Brown ebb and swell, submerged beneath rave-tinged stabs and incandescent pads that flicker like distant signals in fog. It’s immersive, patient, and precisely engineered to alter perception without resorting to clichés.

As our minds start to give in to Wink’s potent concoction, low-end pulses slowly suggest that there’s more at play, while the luscious vocals now take center stage, intertwining with rising stabs for a thunderous surge in tension. It's the kind of long haul only the most seasoned of producers can pull off, and Wink is most certainly in no shortage of mileage to do so.

For the second half, the OVUM mastermind unleashes a prismatic stream propelled by a muscular groove that takes “I Keep Coming Back” into Valhalla. Storming straight through the gates, Wink deploys clipped hi-hats and steely percussion that punch through the mix with intent, while colors cascade from the walls as we are compelled to combust in an overwhelming display of ecstasy, drifting into a higher state of consciousness.

“I Keep Coming Back (Josh Wink Interpretation)” is a reminder that great remixes don’t just reframe a track—they expand its universe. For Wink, that universe continues to evolve on its own terms, pulling in artists like Qess who share his exploratory spirit. In a scene obsessed with what’s next, this is a welcome return to the timeless.
