Weska’s well-known willingness to experiment and push boundaries has led to a distinctive sound that seamlessly blends genres and captivates listeners. From his early days with renowned labels like Drumcode and Cocoon to his more recent ventures with Mute, Bedrock, and Factory 93, Weska's talent and dedication have garnered him recognition among industry giants, and now, the Canadian artist has landed on Arcane Music with the drop of his Lift You Up EP.
Brimming with energy, the opening cut, “Lift You Up,” pounds its way into our brains with crisp hats and throbbing low-end dynamics. Surging through the mix, an irresistible vocal chop drives us forward as we collide against a classic 90s spoken word sample that reminds us of the endless graces of house music. Now in full force, Weska unleashes a blitz of acidic stabs, adding depth to the piece as his creation twists and contorts in dazzling fashion through the late hours of the night. The biggest ride in the amusement park, Weska’s “Lift You Up” is a brilliantly crafted rollercoaster that will get you to cut in line just for another go.
On the flip side, the Ontario-based maestro amps the ante with the sublime “Gems”. A behemoth from the onset, its massive kickdrum treads under a mesh of razor-sharp hi-hats before re-shaping into a broken beat, exquisitely raising the tension. Aided by another classic 90s vocal line, Weska conjures a rave-laced synth lead that sways with absolute confidence over the hybrid piece. And, before we know it, another breakdown and return to a defragmented section simply adds another welcomed turn as we race and glide with outstanding finesse through the grittiest end of the spectrum.
More than a scrumptious flashback to a golden era where a myriad of genres used to collide with a no-fucks-given attitude, Weska’s Lift You Up EP is a gorgeous weapon, presumably capable of offsetting an intoxicating need to rave out.
