Eduardo McGregor - Men Against Fire - Renaissance Records

Following Eduardo McGregor’s memorable debut on Renaissance's Merin VA series, the Mexican-born artist returns to the iconic imprint with a sensational full-fledged debut EP, Men Against Fire. More than a handful of collaborative efforts with Mitch Oliver, Hickey & Kalo, Mauricio Viana, and Molac, Men Against Fire is a cinematic window into the inner workings of Eduardo McGregor that showcases the producer’s ability to contort and bend without ever sacrificing identity.

On the titular opener, a plethora of moving parts start to animate, with cogs whirring as they set off an irresistible groove that sways with an ever-clear sense of finesse. Slowly, iridescent hues slither as they lead us to a spellbinding vocal. With a most captivating narrative, Eduardo McGregor & Mitch Oliver create momentum with an arresting breakdown where the flames of yesterday ignite one last time before they are consumed in a transmuting third act.

Unfurling over a restless tapestry, the seductive “Feromona” works its chemistry over a velvet-laced low end before sultry synthetic swells put us under their spell. Overriding our senses, Eduardo McGregor and Hicky & Kalo drive desire home with flavourful chord sequences that intertwine in a most narcotic manner as an entrancing speech adorns its kaleidoscopic design for a truly gorgeous and blissed-out trip.

Providing a deeper twist, Eduardo McGregor & Nicolas Viana’s “Nocturnal Animals” slowly builds over a textured percussion and colored chords unleashing a melange of dazzling accents and chopped vocal effects that paint a heady, hazy picture. Expertly balancing power and emotion, McGregor & Viana is an arresting complement to the Men Against Fire EP, showcasing a different side of the record.

On the final curve, Eduardo McGregor links up with collaborator Molac for the exquisite “Perfect Blue”. Coursing through the same vein as “Nocturnal Animals”, the final cut treads across the deeper shades of house and techno with a hypnotic frame that ebbs and flows with utmost ease. With “Perfect Blue” firing on all cylinders, the pair conjures a series of liquid chords and soaring strings, dipped in the waters of our sweet yesterday for an unforgettable finale.
