Hans Zimmer to restore iconic BBC Maida Vale synth collection

Award-winning composer Hans Zimmer is collaborating with AJHSynth to restore and reinvent the iconic BBC Maida Vale’s legendary synth collection from the 1960s and 70s. Known for his scores in films such as Interstellar, Inception, and The Lion King, Zimmer is now channeling his expertise into a groundbreaking project to recreate the sounds of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop.

This ambitious endeavor involves the creation of a "one-of-a-kind, everything-but-the-kitchen-sink-style super-synth." Developed from the ground up, the synthesizer is designed as an “uncompromised analogue modular system, a sonic creation tool without equal.” It comprises 40 individual modules, featuring a wide array of effects, envelopes, oscillators, and filters, ensuring a versatile and rich sound palette.

Named in homage to the BBC’s Radiophonic Workshop in Maida Vale, the studio was recently acquired by Zimmer, who has long admired the pioneering work done there. His decision to purchase the studio reflects his dedication to preserving and revitalizing the innovative spirit of early electronic music.

The new synthesizer will become the focal point of the Radiophonic Workshop, with Zimmer’s input crucial to its design and functionality. AJHSynth emphasized Zimmer’s significant role, stating: “No one has a better understanding of what sounds pleasing and how to use it best. When Hans says that a particular synth sounds more engaging and fuller than others, he is speaking from a position of experience and authority.”

The first completed synthesizer will be unveiled by AJHSynth at SUPERBOOTH24, a premier music convention in Berlin, this May. The event will provide attendees with the first glimpse of this state-of-the-art synthesizer and its capabilities.

For those interested in the full specifications or who wish to inquire about the forthcoming synth, more information can be found on AJHSynth’s official website.
