Moog introduces Spectravox Analogue Processor

Moog has unveiled the Spectravox, a semi-modular analogue spectral processor that promises to revolutionize sound sculpting in modern music production.

The Spectravox is the latest addition to Moog’s esteemed semi-modular family. Central to its design is a 10-band filter bank, which Moog touts as instrumental in producing "lively drones" and "colourful tonal sweeps" from incoming audio. This feature infuses external sounds with resonant depth and psychedelic spectral movement, positioning the Spectravox as a trailblazing tool for auditory exploration.

In addition to processing external audio, the Spectravox doubles as a standalone synthesizer. It houses a simple analogue Voltage Controlled Oscillator (VCO) capable of producing saw and pulse waves, paired with a decay envelope. The unit also features an analogue Moog oscillator and a dynamic white noise generator, providing a versatile approach to sound synthesis.

One of the standout features of the Spectravox is its ability to function as a 10-band analogue vocoder when connected to a microphone. This capability, combined with innovative integrated modulation of all its filters, represents a significant advancement in vocoder and filter bank technology. Moog highlights this integration as an "exploration and expansion of the traditional vocoder and filter bank topology," engineered to inspire and transform modern music production.

The Spectravox's versatility makes it suitable for a wide range of applications, from processing vocals and drums to enhancing synthesizer sounds. This groundbreaking tool offers musicians and producers new ways to experiment with and manipulate sound, further cementing Moog’s legacy of innovation in the world of electronic music.

To showcase the multi-faceted capabilities of the new processor, Moog has teamed up with artist Jamie Lidell for an original performance of his song “Awake and Alive”. In this demonstration, Lidell processes every part of the composition, including drums, pedal steel, and synthesizers, through the Spectravox, highlighting its diverse functionality and sonic potential.
