DJs on Twitch to share streaming earnings with labels

Twitch CEO Dan Clancy has confirmed that DJs streaming on the platform must now share their earnings with record labels. In an interview with Twitch channel TweakMusicTips, Clancy revealed that a new structure would be implemented, requiring artists to declare their earnings through the website.

Under this new arrangement, Twitch will pay a portion of what is owed to the labels, but artists will need to contribute a portion of their revenue as well. Clancy explained that the revenue earned from tracks played by DJs while streaming will be tracked, and this income will then be distributed to the record labels associated with each track.

It's important to note that this change will specifically impact DJs on the streaming platform, with livestreams and videos having different rules regarding copyrighted music.

This move comes in response to copyright issues on Twitch, particularly related to the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA). DJs streaming on the platform experienced an increase in copyright takedowns of both livestreams and archival clips in 2020.

To address these concerns, Clancy spoke with record labels to develop a fair solution that allows DJs to continue streaming without facing DMCA takedown requests. As part of this solution, Twitch will now share revenues with record labels, ensuring compliance with copyright regulations while supporting the platform's music community.
