IBIZA TO DEMAND PROOF OF ACCOMODATION

A new rule in Spain could potentially impact UK tourists visiting popular destinations such as Ibiza, imposing fines of up to £8,000 if proof of accommodation cannot be provided upon entry.

This requirement applies not only to British citizens but also to non-EU passport holders, emphasizing the need for visitors to demonstrate lodging arrangements for the duration of their stay, which must not exceed 90 days.

Additionally, non-EU tourists must furnish evidence of a return or onward ticket to gain entry into Spanish regions. Accepted forms of proof of accommodation range from booking confirmations from hotels, Airbnbs, or hostels, to documentation confirming a visit to a holiday home or secondary residence in Spain. Alternatively, those intending to stay with friends or family members must present an invitation letter, known as a "carta de invitación," upon arrival.

Failure to produce the necessary paperwork could result in significant fines, as reported by Olive Press, underscoring the importance of compliance with these regulations.

Moreover, hosts issuing invitation letters must adhere to specific criteria, including being Spanish nationals, EU citizens residing in Spain, or non-EU citizens with legal residency in the country. This process involves a fee of approximately €70 to €80 and requires an application at the local police station, typically taking between 20 and 60 days to complete.

In addition to these travel advisories, tourists in Spanish regions are cautioned about potential changes to operating hours for restaurants and bars. This adjustment follows the Prime Minister's decision to reduce work hours to 35 per week, prompting calls for aligning closing times with those observed in other European countries.

Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister Yolanda Diaz has emphasized the need for consistency in closing hours, citing concerns about extended operating times and advocating for a more balanced approach.
