Toolroom Academy shares report on emering artists
In a concerted effort to bridge the gap between passion and sustainable careers in the ever-evolving electronic music industry, Toolroom Records, through its educational arm, Toolroom Academy, unveiled the comprehensive findings of its report during the recent Toolroom Academy Live event in London.
Commissioned by Toolroom Academy and meticulously crafted by Rufy Ghazi and David Boyle, the report delves deep into the challenges and opportunities facing emerging electronic artists. Drawing from a rich pool of data collected from over 250 new artists and supplemented by enlightening interviews with seasoned professionals and educators, the report offers a panoramic view of the industry's landscape.
Miles Shackleton, the driving force behind Toolroom Academy, articulated the profound motivation behind the report, citing a palpable frustration among aspiring artists grappling with the disparity between their creative output and tangible career prospects. "We have sensed a frustration among our student community," Shackleton remarked, "that despite doing the hard yards of production and contributing great music to the scene, this effort was not mirrored with opportunity in return."
The report serves as a clarion call for action, highlighting the stark realities faced by emerging artists. Astonishingly, 76% of respondents expressed doubts about the financial viability of their careers, while 62% admitted to struggling with audience growth in the digital realm. Moreover, the report sheds light on broader challenges, ranging from navigating algorithms to combating burnout and managing rejection's toll on mental well-being.
Far from a mere catalogue of grievances, the report offers a roadmap for change. Proposing targeted strategies for growth and collaboration, it calls for industry-wide initiatives aimed at nurturing talent, demystifying entry points, and fortifying artists with the necessary skills to thrive in an ever-competitive arena.
At its core, the report underscores Toolroom Academy's commitment to empowering the next generation of electronic music luminaries. "Our future objective at the Toolroom Academy," Shackleton affirmed, "is to truly understand and support new electronic music artists." With a forward-looking approach, the report charts a course for educational evolution, emphasizing networking, resilience, and hands-on experiences as cornerstones of success.
